Your MT5 backtests, queued, running and compared in one place

Testing an Expert Advisor properly means many runs: every symbol it trades, several timeframes, a few set files, more than one broker’s data. In the MetaTrader Strategy Tester that is one run at a time, by hand. Backtest Manager turns it into a queue. You describe the tests once, it builds every combination and runs them while you do something else.

Nothing is simulated. Every test runs in a real MT5 terminal with the real Strategy Tester, the same engine you would use yourself, and the report it writes is read deal by deal. On top of that you get what the tester does not have: batch mode across symbols and timeframes, optimizations you can filter and promote to backtests, a library for your EAs and set files, combined backtests, a Portfolio Builder and a Robustness Suite.

We built it for our own research and have run more than 14,000 backtests with it. The desktop app runs on your Windows PC with your own MT5 terminals; Backtest Manager Cloud adds our servers and keeps the two in sync.

What Backtest Manager does

Everything the Strategy Tester does, for many tests at once, plus the tools to make sense of the results.

  • Batch mode: one setup, every combination

Pick an EA and a set file, then choose several symbols and timeframes.

Pick an EA and a set file, then choose several symbols and timeframes. Backtest Manager creates one test per combination, with the modelling, latency, deposit and leverage you set once. Something the Strategy Tester cannot do: a multi-symbol run without setting each test up by hand.

  • Optimizations, also across many symbols

Set start, step and stop for any input, choose fast genetic or complete search and the criterion to rank by.

Set start, step and stop for any input, choose fast genetic or complete search and the criterion to rank by. In batch mode the same optimization runs on every symbol and timeframe you choose, each as its own run.

  • Find the passes that matter

Optimization results open as a table you can filter: profit factor above 1.2, more than 500 trades, sorted by recovery factor.

Optimization results open as a table you can filter: profit factor above 1.2, more than 500 trades, sorted by recovery factor. Each pass shows which inputs it changed from the defaults, and one click promotes it to a full backtest. You can also import an MT5 optimization cache (.opt) and work through it the same way.

  • A library for your EAs and set files

Upload Expert Advisors (.ex5) and set files once, link each set file to its robot and start a test straight from the library.

  • Set-file versions and variations

Edit a set file inside the app, save it as a new version (one per broker, say) or create variations to test side by side.

  • Results you can filter, sort and compare

Every completed test lands in Results with its return, drawdown, return-to-drawdown, win rate, profit factor and Sharpe ratio.

  • Combine backtests on one account

Select up to ten results and combine them.

Select up to ten results and combine them. Their trades are replayed together on one account, so you see the real combined drawdown and growth, not a sum of separate curves, and how much each strategy contributes month by month.

  • Portfolio Builder

Build a portfolio from the robots you have backtested: match strategies, set goals such as a monthly target and a maximum drawdown, and compare the variants it builds, from the lowest drawdown to the most aggressive.

  • Queue to a spreadsheet and back

Export the queue to CSV, edit or extend it in Excel or Google Sheets, and import it again.

Who it suits

Built on the real Strategy Tester

The figures are MetaTrader’s own, read from the reports, and everything around them is there to help you check them.

  • The real MT5 engine

Every test runs in a MetaTrader 5 terminal with the Strategy Tester, every tick based on real ticks if you choose it.

  • Every deal, analysed

Symbol performance, win and loss streaks, long against short, risk-to-reward and execution costs: the trade analysis works from the report’s deals.

  • Equity, not just balance

The equity curve is rebuilt from the deals and price bars, so floating drawdown shows, and a combined test shows each source on the same chart.

  • Backtests that stay current

Results are available through an API.

  3. Upload your EA and set files

Add the robot and its set files to the library, link them, and add a license key if the robot needs one.

  4. Queue your first batch

Choose symbols, timeframes and the period, add the tests to the queue and start it.

Why traders pick Backtest Manager

  1. It saves the hours you spend in the Strategy Tester

One setup becomes dozens of tests, and they run while you work on something else.

One setup becomes dozens of tests, and they run while you work on something else. That time goes into deciding, not clicking.

  2. The results are MetaTrader’s

Because it drives the real tester, a result you find here is one you can reproduce in your own terminal.

  3. It goes further than one backtest

Combined backtests, the Portfolio Builder and the Robustness Suite answer the question that matters before you go live: how the robots behave together and whether a result holds up.

  4. Who should look elsewhere

It is built for MetaTrader 5 on Windows.

It is built for MetaTrader 5 on Windows. If you trade only on MT4, on a Mac without Windows, or by hand without Expert Advisors, Backtest Manager will not help you. And no backtest predicts future results: trading involves risk of loss.

Backtest Manager: common questions

Everything you need to know about the technical requirements and operational capacity of the Backtest Manager, a specialized tool for backtesting and strategy development.

Which platforms does it support?

MetaTrader 5 on Windows. The desktop app runs MT5 terminals installed on your PC; it does not run MT4, and it needs Windows. With Cloud you can also open your results in the browser.

Is it a simulation?

No. Every test runs in a real MetaTrader 5 terminal with the Strategy Tester, and Backtest Manager reads the report MT5 writes. You can reproduce any result in your own terminal with the same settings and data.

Which historical data does it use?

The desktop app tests on the data of the MT5 terminals you add, so on your broker’s history. Cloud tests run on our servers’ terminals, with years of real tick data from brokers such as Darwinex and MetaQuotes.

How many tests run at once?

Free runs one test at a time. Pro runs several MT5 terminals side by side, as many as your PC’s cores and memory allow. Cloud adds 10 guaranteed parallel slots on our servers.

What is included in the free plan?

Unlimited backtests, 3 optimizations and 3 Portfolio Builder runs a month, and 14 days of Pro when you start, so you can try everything before you decide.

What does Pro add?

Unlimited optimizations and Portfolio Builder runs, the Robustness Suite, and Workflows, which is in Beta. Pro costs €29 a month.

What does Cloud add?

Everything in Pro, plus backtesting on our servers with 10 guaranteed parallel slots, and two-way sync: upload the backtests from your PC to your cloud account and download the cloud’s to your PC. Cloud costs €99 a month.

Can I use my own robots and set files?

Yes. Upload any MT5 Expert Advisor (.ex5) and its set files to the library. Robots that need a license key can keep it with them, and set files can have versions and variations.

Can I import tests I ran in MetaTrader?

Yes. Import an MT5 report and it joins your results with its trade analysis, and import an MT5 optimization cache to filter its passes and promote the best to backtests.

Can I cancel?

Yes. Pro and Cloud are monthly subscriptions that you can cancel at any time; you keep the plan until the end of the month you paid for, then return to Free.

Test more, guess less

Backtest Manager is for anyone who tests MetaTrader 5 Expert Advisors and has run out of patience with one Strategy Tester run at a time.

Best suited for:

  • EA developers who test hundreds of inputs and set files before they publish.
  • Portfolio traders who want to see the combined drawdown of their robots.
  • Robot buyers who test an EA on their own symbols and broker data before they trust it.
  • Prop-firm traders who need to know how a strategy behaves against a drawdown limit.

Not recommended for:

  • MT4-only traders: the app runs MetaTrader 5.
  • Mac or Linux users without Windows: the desktop app needs Windows.
  • Manual traders who do not use Expert Advisors.

Backtest Manager opens soon. Join the early-access list and we will email you when your access opens; you start on Free with 14 days of Pro, and upgrade to Pro or Cloud from the app whenever you need more.

Backtest, demo, then a small live account.

That is the order we test our own robots in, and the Account Tracker records every trade along the way. Backtest Manager is one step of it; the other tools cover the rest.
